About the MGM Grand Las Vegas
The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino is located on the Vegas Strip at 3799 S. Las Vegas Boulevard and is the largest single hotel in the United States.
When the hotel opened in 1993 it was owned by the MGM Grand movie production company and featured an extensive Wizard of Oz theme, which accounts for the green “Emerald City” color of the building itself. Indoor attractions included animatronic figures of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, and the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as scenes and locations from the movie.
The casino and resort’s original entrance was a giant lion’s head, made to resemble MGM’s logo, Leo the Lion. Visitors would enter the casino through the lion’s mouth. Renovations in 1996 and 2000 removed the lion’s jaws entrance and nearly all traces of the Wizard of Oz theme.
